The Bayville Bridge construction site in Georgia is going ahead as planned
Posted February 04, 2018 04:20:36 Construction crews have started construction on a new bridge in southern Georgia.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) says the new bridge is “the most extensive roadway bridge construction project in Georgia” and is being constructed on the site of the Bayville bridge that once served as the main link between Atlanta and Savannah.
The new bridge will link up to the Georgia State Highway Administration’s new highway corridor project in Atlanta, and is expected to open in 2019.
The construction has already been a long time coming for GDOT, which has been working on the bridge for the past 20 years.
GDOT originally announced the project in 2015.
The $2.7 billion project will include $1.9 billion in state funds and $2 billion in private investment.
GDOGOT Chief Engineer Jim Kuczmarski says the bridge will be “a world-class, world-leading transportation bridge for people, goods and cargo.”
The project is expected be completed by 2024.
The bridge will span a total of 12,000 feet (3,200 meters).
It will be the largest bridge project in the state of Georgia.
GDOC is a regional transportation agency that works to improve the lives of the people of Georgia by providing transportation options that are convenient, safe and affordable.
GDODOT will also provide a variety of services, including the planning and construction of new bridges and roadways.
